Music production house Music Patchbay, model agency Velvet Production and planning and production house Music Compass Production had the idea of combining festive music with eye candy in a DVD release entitled 2011 Chinese New Year Celebration with 8 Beauty Queens. But it was not easy finding eight beauty queens who can sing and have the time to record an album together. "The criteria for the girls were, of course, that they can sing, look good and have the time," said Jack Lew, the event and promotion director of Music Compass Production. "The most difficult part was time as they are all working." Finally, in September last year, an audition was held for 26 hopefuls and ultimately, eight were chosen – Jeslyn Loh, Karen Toh, Angie Ng, Stephy Lee, Danielle Khor, Roxanne Khor, Eugene Ooi and Yennie Lim. Because the girls are from the same modelling agency, they had no difficulty where rapport is concerned. However, stepping into a studio to record the songs or performing live on stage is another story. "Singing in karaoke lounges and singing in a recording studio is so different," said Stephy. "In the studio, you can hear everything (every mistake) clearly and we needed to brush up on our pronunciation and things like that. It was really a new experience," said this former Miss Malaysia Friendship International 2010 winner. Danielle added: "Because we are all newcomers to recording, everything in the studio was new and interesting to us and we just had fun, and our director, Vincent Pang, almost lost all his hair in frustration. "We are just so thankful for all his patience and guidance," said this beauty queen who holds a slew of titles including Miss Malaysia Top Model International 2010, Miss Malaysia Queen International 2007 and first runner-up for Malaysia's Best Model of the Year 2005. The music videos were filmed in Penang where most of them are based and feature the girls in traditional Chinese costumes in bright colours, singing some old favourite festive songs like Cai Sun Dao (God of Prosperity Arrives), Huan Le Nian Nian (Happy Years), and Gong Xi Da Jia Xin Nian Hau (Happy New Year to All) to herald in the Chinese New Year. "The DVD contains just eight tracks so as not to give them too much pressure," said Lew. "Four songs are group efforts while the other four have them pairing up. "There were not much problems but given that they are new, some of them tend to forget the lyrics. "The girls all took vocal lessons in their respective hometowns to brush up their singing but, of course, to be honest, you can't expect all eight to be really good. However, while all are passable, two or three of them really show potential." As beauty queens, it is only natural for the public to focus on their looks but the girls are determined to show that they are not just pretty faces. "This is a good opportunity for all eight of us to show the world what we can do," said Danielle. "It's a big challenge for us and people would be interested to see the results (which is a selling point for the album)." "We have worked hard at this and although it was tiring, the experience is worth it and we hope that the public will like it," concluded Karen, Miss Malaysia Tourism Queen International 2010 first runner-up and Uptown Model of the Year 2010. The other title holders are Jeslyn, who is Miss Chinatown Kedah 2010, Miss Auto City 2010 and Miss Global 2010 first runner-up; Angie who is Miss Chinatown Kedah 2010 second runner-up; and Roxanne, Miss Malaysia Earth Kedah 2007 and Malaysia's Best Model of the Year 2006. Meanwhile, Eugene is Miss Penang Top Model International 2010; and Yennie who is Miss Asia 2007, Miss Malaysia Chinatown 2007 and Miss Malaysia International 2007.
