He said "Rule of Three" is an independent art film that depicts the events before, during and after the abduction of a female college graduate who checks into a motel, but does not check out. The film marks his directorial debut. "The film has a three-part structure, three story lines and three main characters, plus other threesomes," said Shapiro, 32, who is a 1996 graduate of Manalapan High School. "It also has the structural thrust of karma of seeing the destiny of an actor." According to Shapiro, "Rule of Three" had its world premiere at Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival in July 2008 and Ben Siegler (Jon) won the best actor award. At the 2008 Shriekfest International Festival held in Los Angeles, Rhoda Jordan won best acting performance for her supporting role as Lo in "Rule of Three." Jordan, who is Shapiro's wife, wrote the film's screenplay. The film's United States premiere was in September 2008 at the Fantastic Fest held in Austin, Texas. "Rule of Three" features Rodney Eastman (Russ), a Canadian actor and musician who is known for his roles in "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4," as well as the 2009 remake of the cult horror film "I Spit on Your Grave." "The shooting of 'Rule of Three' in a real Los Angeles motel went smoothly," said Shapiro, who studied video during his junior and senior years at the Fine and Performing Arts Center at Howell High School. "It was the sound mix that was the hardest." He said writing led him into the horror and suspense film genre, beginning with the 2002 publication of "Short of a Picnic," a collection of short stories he wrote about mental illness, and then "It's Only Temporary" (2005), a book that chronicles the world before it is destroyed by a meteorite. "These were grim and dark topics, and I take a dark view of things," said Shapiro, who has also written anthologies as well as science fiction and apocalyptic fiction. "I was a natural fit for the horror and suspense genre of film, such as 'Rule of Three.' " He credits Fangoria Horror magazine based in New York for getting the ball rolling on "Rule of Three" by holding a sneak preview at its convention before the premiere of the film. "I'm grateful to them, and 'Rule of Three' continues to receive good reviews through film festivals and social networks such as Facebook," said Shapiro, who is a graduate of Emerson College, Boston. "Now, with the release of the DVD, a wider audience can view it through Netflix and other retail outlets." The audience appeal for "Rule of Three," which deals with the topic of sexual predators, he said, is mostly women, according to responses on Facebook and other social networks. Although Shapiro does not follow in the footsteps of any family filmmakers, he said he has always had the support of his parents. His mother, Nina, who is an artist, and his father, Jeff, lived in Manalapan for more than 30 years and currently reside in Long Beach Island, he said. In 2011, Shapiro said, his next project will be a collaboration with his wife, Rhoda, on a documentary about women's issues, such as gender equality and the dangers facing women. They reside in Tarzana, Calif., where Shapiro has located his production company, Wildlight Entertainment LLC. "Rule of Three" is distributed by Big Screen Group, headquartered in Paramount Studios, Hollywood.
