| Rockwell delivers New England accent with 'Conviction' Posted: 30 Jan 2011 10:15 AM PST Conviction: B+ Most DVD extras serve as a cheap sales pitch. The lone featurette included on the DVD release of "Conviction" is a bold break from cliched actor interviews. Director Tony Goldwyn ("Dexter") tells the real-life story of high school dropout Betty Anne Waters' (Hilary Swank, "Amelia") efforts to free her brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell, "Iron Man 2") from a life sentence for the 1980 murder of Ayer resident Katharina Brow. The real Betty Anne appears in the brief feature to share the tragic, not-seen-on-film end to this inspiring story. When Kenny is sentenced to prison in 1983, Betty Anne swears he's innocent despite damning testimony. To aid her brother, Betty Anne must earn her GED, bachelor's and law degrees to serve as his lawyer. The result is a riveting film, even if Swank tries too hard to perfect Betty Anne's New England accent. Rockwell, on the other hand, could pass as a native. The real Betty Anne even comments on Rockwell's ability to capture her brother despite the physical differences between the two. Fox Searchlight/Twentieth Century Fox, $29.98, Blu-ray $39.99, with featurette, available Tuesday. • Also available Tuesday: "Alice in Wonderland" (Walt Disney, Blu-ray combo pack $39.99), with featurettes, deleted scenes and games; "Let Me In" (Anchor Bay, $29.98, Blu-ray $39.99), with featurettes, director commentary and deleted scenes; "Mean Girls 2" (Paramount, $21.99), with featurettes and gag reel; "Never Let Me Go" (Fox Searchlight/Twentieth Century Fox, $29.98, Blu-ray $39.98), with featurette; and "Welcome to the Rileys" (Sony, $28.95, Blu-ray $34.95).
