The Lark Theater will screen the independently produced teen comedy "The Prankster" Sept. 12, at 7 p.m.

Written, produced and directed by Larkspur resident Tony Vidal, the film was shot entirely in Marin County.

The film is about to go national with a DVD release distributed by Strand Releasing.

Vidal, a longtime resident of Larkspur and a 1970 graduate of San Rafael High School, will make an appearance at the screening. He will talk about the process of filmmaking and introduce the movie along with several of the film's local actors. The cast of the film includes veteran character actors Kurt Fuller, Michaela Watkins and Ken Davitian, teen stars Devon Werkheiser, Maiara Walsh, Robert Adamson, Jareb Dauplaise, Kunal Sharma and Madison Riley, and talented newcomers Matt Angel and Veronica Sixtos.

Vidal is a graduate of USC film school and a veteran of the studio system. For many years he has been involved with independent films, co-writing "Her Best Move" (also shot in Marin) and then forming Prankster Entertainment, whose aim is to make movies that entertain and enlighten.

"We live in a fascinating and crucial time," said Vidal. "Humanity seems poised on the brink of either a huge breakthrough in consciousness or self-destruction. Now more than ever, there's a critical need for stories that lighten the heart and expand consciousness."

While "The Prankster" is a teen comedy in the tradition of "Sixteen Candles," "Ferris Bueller" and "Breaking Away," it has an additional dimension of depth, featuring references to Rumi and Kazantzakis, among others. Vidal's hope is "to give young people a glimpse into some of the great wisdom traditions while at the same time delivering the outrageous and bawdy humor typical of the genre."

Chris Karas is the leader of the Pranksters, a secret society that rights the wrongs of high school by pulling sophisticated pranks on deserving oppressors. But with graduation looming, Chris longs for more from life. Guided by the homespun wisdom of his charmingly eccentric Uncle Nick, Chris embarks on a challenging path of self-discovery and romance. "The Prankster" is thought by some to be the next teen-movie classic.

The Lark Theater is located at 549 Magnolia Ave., in downtown Larkspur. For more information, visit the website, larktheater.net, or call 924-5111. For Prankster Entertainment, visit theprankster movie.com.
