The Kat Comes Back to The Vampire Diaries Posted: 07 Sep 2010 11:50 AM PDT | The Kat Comes Back to The Vampire Diaries | Television Review: The Vampire Diaries, "The Return" by R.J. Carter Published: September 7, 2010 While Elena adores a minuet, Stefan Salvatore, and quite possibly crêpes Suzettes, our Katherine loves to rock and roll and make Damon lose control. These identical teens -- one of whom is the great-great-great grandmother of the other -- are now loose in Mystic Falls, and it doesn't take long for the mistaken identity hijinks to put a kink into the strained relationship between the vampiric Salvatore brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) -- both of whom once loved Katherine, and both of whom now love Elena (both played by Nina Dobrev). But that's not the only season one dangler to get picked up this Thursday when The CW premieres the second season opener of The Vampire Diaries. In "The Return," Katherine is, indeed, back -- but what exactly is her game? Both Stefan and Damon would love to know the rules, but as she has stated to them in the past: there are no rules. Does she want Elena dead, or is it more advantageous to her to retain the potential for deception. Like the Salvatore brothers, she too can walk in the daylight, giving her a wide latitude for causing mayhem and destruction -- and the chaos is only beginning, as she makes her mark (so to speak) on one of the principal players in this teen drama in a serious OMG episode cliffhanger. Katherine's not the only evil vampire to return to The Vampire Diaries, however. Her destabilizing presence serves to drive a new wedge between Stefan and Damon, pushing the latter into a rash act that once again clearly marks him as a tortured villain. But what could cause such a tragic turn of events, when Damon was so close to becoming a caring, human character? It's an emotionally unsettling scene that will have viewers slipping off the edge of their seats when it happens, and will pretty much rule out any more kisses from Elena in the near future. Left unanswered thus far is why Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) and his father were affected by the vampire trap at the end of the first season. But in the wake of the dearly departed Mayor Lockwood, viewers are introduced to his younger brother, Mason Lockwood (Taylor Kinney, Trauma). And while we don't know why the star quarterback for the Mystic Falls Timberwolves was incapacitated by the Gilbert Device, the title of the third slated episode of season two -- "Bad Moon Rising" -- certainly gives way to some interesting/predictable speculation. The Founders Council may have killed off all the tomb vampires just in time to need the services of animal control. The Vampire Diaries continues to be an addicting show about supernatural creatures -- a teen soap opera that is just more imaginative and captivating than other current entries in the genre. The jawdropping events (as in plural!) of this season opener will definitely have fans talking, and set up the rest of the season for more nailbiting twists and turns. Consider me hooked. The Vampire Diaries, "The Return" premieres Thursday, September 9, 8:00pm | 7:00pm CT on The CW Network.
