The King of Soul - The Story of Sam Cooke

Filmmaker, Scott McCullough (The Exorcism Diaries, Prince Unauthorized) has reportedly optioned his latest script to U.S. based Producers, Silver Lining Pictures. "Born by the River-The Story of Sam Cooke" is the story of a man affectionately referred to as "The King of Soul" and one of the fore founders of soul music. Known for his unique voice, meaningful lyrics and wide influence of today's world of music. Cooke, authored songs such as "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Chain Gang" and "Wonderful World" among his most influential hits. The former gospel artist turned pop-icon died after being shot in a Los Angeles motel in 1964.

Sam (Samuel) Cooke was killed after being shot during a dispute with Hacienda Motel Manager, Bertha Franklin in Los Angeles, California on December 11, 1964. A Los Angeles court ruled, justifiable homicide and that Cooke was inebriated during the incident. Elisa Boyer; said to be in the company of Cooke earlier that same evening, had also called the police shortly before the shooting claiming she had been kidnapped by Cooke. McCullough's film is based upon the views of his family and loved ones during the coroner's inquiry into his death. Sam Cooke died at the age of 33, evidence and circumstances surrounding the incident have remained highly controversial to this day.

Cooke, a pioneer entrepreneur rumored to be a major financial contributor to the Civil Rights Movement in both Hollywood and Mississippi contributed to the influence of Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart, Otis Redding and the Great James Brown.

Sam Cooke was more recently popularized as inspiration for U.S. President Barack Obama's electoral "Change" theme and his 2008 victory speech in Chicago, IL.
